Students demonstrate on May 4th 1919, led by Chen Duxiu they protest the terms of the Versailles Treaty the May 4th Movement led to a huge upsuge in social protest, and to the creation of the both the New Culture Movement and the Communist Party of China founded by Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao.

After the crushing of the urban Communist movement (1927), caused by the impostion of a policy of subordination of the Communist party and the workers movement to the Nationalist Guomindang, the students in urban areas started a new wave of protests in the 1930's against the Japanese occupation.

The Communists who under Mao's new leadership, dissappeared into the wilderness from 1927-1949, eventually taking power not through an urban insurrection, as envisaged by the Communist Part founders, but on the strength of a peasant army (here seen at a rally in 1949) which conquered the corrupt dicatorship of Chiang Kai Shek. Here, Mao declares the formation of the Central Government of the People's Republic of China on Tiananmen Square.
